Lion Heart, working name

You've just had the same argument. Again.

Sit in the car for two minutes and say what happened, the way you'd tell a mate. You get back what you actually said, the moment it turned, and one thing to try next time.

Not therapy. Not advice about your relationship. Not who was right.

Here is what comes back

“Ninety seconds in, you said “you never think about anyone but yourself”. In the minute before that you'd asked her twice what she actually needed. You didn't ask again after it.”

What it cost you

It stopped being about the school run and started being about whether you respect each other. You spent the rest of it defending one sentence you didn't mean.

One thing to try

When you hear yourself reaching for never or always, say the specific thing instead. One sentence. That's the whole exercise.

Notice what isn't in there: anything about what she was thinking, and any answer to who was right. It won't do either, ever.

That's it. Two minutes talking, one page back, one small thing to try. It takes less time than finding a parking space.

Why bother

You already know it went badly. You don't know where.

By the time a row is over it's a blur. You remember the worst thing that got said, usually the worst thing you said, and almost nothing about how you got there. So the next one comes round and you brace for it with nothing new to bring.

This gives you the part you can't see from inside it: the actual sentence it turned on, and what that cost you for the twenty minutes after. Small enough that you can do something about it before Thursday.

01 / SAY IT

Two minutes, out loud

In the car, on a walk, before bed. Talk about the one you just had, or the one you keep having. No form to fill in and nobody to perform for.

02 / READ IT

The moment it turned

Your own words quoted back, and the point it stopped being about the thing and started being about the two of you.

03 / TRY ONE THING

A move, not a lecture

One specific thing, drawn out of the row you just described. Not a reading list, not a rule about your relationship, not homework.

04 / SEE IT SHIFT

Whether it's actually changing

After a few of these you can see whether you're handling them better. Before that there genuinely isn't enough to tell, and it'll say so rather than draw you a flattering line.

Where this is going

Then the same thing, with both of you in it.

Right now it's one person: you, your phone, your side of it. That's deliberate, and it's the honest place to start. But the argument had two people in it, and that's the version worth building.

Here's how it'll work.

01 / BOTH PHONES

You each have your own

Your account on your phone, theirs on theirs. Nobody signs anybody else up, and there's no shared login where one of you holds the keys.

02 / BOTH SAY YES

Every single time

It doesn't start until you've both tapped yes, on your own phones, for that conversation. Either of you can stop it halfway. Either of you can delete it afterwards, and it goes for both.

03 / BOTH GET HEARD

Your phone hears you, theirs hears them

One phone on the table and whoever's sitting nearest it gets recorded properly while the other comes out as a mumble, so the quiet one looks like they barely spoke. Two phones fixes that. If it still hasn't caught you both well enough to be fair, it won't score it, and it'll tell you why.

04 / EACH GET YOUR OWN

Yours is about you

You get your page, they get theirs. You don't get a report card on them and they don't get one on you. There's no shared scoreboard and nothing to screenshot and win with.

None of this is built yet. One-person comes first, and the two-person session only gets built if people actually come back and use the first bit. If this is the part you'd want, there's a box for it at the bottom. That's genuinely how it gets moved up the list.

Where the lines are

What it refuses to do is the reason to trust the rest of it.

Your voice

The recording never leaves your phone

What you say is turned into text on the phone itself and the audio goes. It isn't uploaded, it isn't stored, there's no archive of you having a bad night that somebody could go and listen to.

Who's right

It will never settle it for you

Not out of politeness. It only heard your half. Anything that claims to settle an argument off one person's account is guessing, and it'd be guessing in your favour, which is worse than no answer at all.

Labels

It's about the moment, not about who you are

No types, no diagnoses, nothing that tells you what you are. And it won't do it to your partner either, or your dad, or whoever else turns up in the story. They're not here to answer for themselves.

Consent

Nobody gets measured who didn't agree to it

Today that's just you. There's no mode that scores your partner, and there won't be one. When there are two of you, it's both of you, each agreeing from your own phone.

If it's worse

If you're describing being hurt, it stops

You don't get a mark out of ten for that. It points you at people who help instead. Nobody should be graded on describing being treated badly.

Straight answer

There's nothing to buy, and it might not get built.

A handful of people are trying it right now, by invitation. That's the whole thing at the moment, and I'd rather say that than dress it up.

What exists
A test version on a few phones. One person, one recording, one page back.
What doesn't
No App Store listing, nothing to pay for, and no two-person session yet.
What decides it
Whether anybody who tries it comes back and does a second one. If they don't, this doesn't get built, and that will have been the right answer.
Being straight with you
There's a score out of ten in there, and it wobbles by about two points run to run. So if yours moves by one next week that's the measuring, not you, and it'll say so instead of drawing you a confident line.

Where this came from

My partner and I were already doing this by hand. It took an evening, every time.

I'm Nick Tong, founder and CEO, and I'm the one building it.

We started running our own conversations through the meeting-recording tools and the AI engines I use for work. Record it, wait, read the write-up, work out what it was telling us. And it worked. It showed us things about how we'd handled something that neither of us had noticed while we were in the middle of it.

The problem was everything around it. Stitching the tools together, waiting, reading a wall of text, and by then the conversation you were trying to understand is two days cold and you have stopped caring how it went. Nobody does that a second time, however useful it was the first.

So what I wanted was the version that is just there. You talk for two minutes in the car and you have read it before you are through the front door. Everything else on this page comes out of that.

If you want in

Nothing to download yet. Leave your email and I'll tell you when there is.

The two questions below just help me work out who to hand the test version to first. It needs a fairly new iPhone at the moment, which rules plenty of people out for now. Answer them or skip them; either way you're on the list and you'll hear from me when there's something real to say.

Kept: your email and whatever you ticked above. Not kept: your name, your IP address, or anything you'd ever say into the app. Reply to any email and I'll delete you. If the form won't submit, email me instead.
